New DVD and Blu-ray releases this week include 'The Five-Year Engagement' and 'Safe'

Comedy, romance and action films are all available

After a dismal August (at least as far as new DVD releases go), we've finally turned a corner into September, and I'm hoping that the choices on DVD and Blu-ray this month are better than last. So far, so good: This week's biggest DVD releases include a romantic comedy and an action film starring one of the most popular action stars working right now.

The Five-Year Engagement is finally available on DVD and Blu-ray this week, along with the Jason Statham action-thriller Safe and the horror (B-movie style) film Piranha 3DD. Hey, to each his own, right?First up: Let's discuss The Five-Year Engagement, shall we? I know the film didn't get the best reviews ever, but sometimes I just want a really sweet, fun romantic comedy to pop in on a rainy afternoon. This looks like the perfect choice. The Five-Year Engagement stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt as a couple who, for various reasons, can't seem to ever take that walk down the aisle. Here's the trailer:

The Five-Year Engagement, by the way, was co-written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (yes, the Stoller who directed 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall). If rom-coms are your thing, this looks like a winner. Without a doubt, this is the best new DVD offering of the week.

Now for two other films that might be of interest: The Jason Statham action movie Safe and the (totally silly, but kind of amusing) horror flick Piranha 3DD are both out this week on Blu-ray and DVD. I haven't seen either, but even with fairly average reviews, I'd say if you are a Statham fan, you'll probably like Safe. As for Piranha 3DD, well, my 18-year-old nephew loved it. I've been known to enjoy a few B-movies over the years, and with David Hasselhoff in the cast, I have to admit I'm a little curious...

I hope everyone finds a new DVD they can enjoy watching this week!
